Single elimination is the shortest clear path from a field of entrants to one champion. Every loss removes an entrant, so a tournament with N entrants needs exactly N-1 decisive matches. Single elimination bracket byes and match counts
A field of 6, 10 or 12 does not fit a power-of-two bracket. The maker expands it to the next valid size, then distributes empty slots by seed so the highest seeds receive balanced first-round byes. A bye is an automatic advance, not a match you need to click or score.
For an unseeded event, shuffle the list first and keep the visible draw seed with the bracket. That makes the draw reproducible: you can explain which draw was used without pretending that every randomized order is identical.

When to use a single elimination bracket

If one early loss would feel too harsh, use the double elimination maker. If every entrant needs several guaranteed matches, build a round robin schedule and move the leading teams into a smaller playoff bracket afterward.
